Introducing a Froebelian Approach

Friedrich Froebel (1782-1852) was a German educator and, arguably, the most significant pioneer of early education and childcare. He was the creator of the ‘kindergarten’ and developed a number of resources which helped children learn through play. Many of these resources are still used today, although the name Froebel may have been forgotten by some over the years.
Our approach at Mount Esk has always been Froebilian to some degree, however recently we have begun a journey exploring our practice, our principles and our play experiences. We are locating ourselves in our practice and making links to the work of Froebel.
A Froebelian approach is a holistic way of thinking about children and childhood, based on a set of principles and values. It is not a ‘method’ or a prescribed curriculum.
Some of the key principles that underpin our approach are;

RESPECT
We are respectful of our children and view them as powerful learners.

CONNECTEDNESS
We believe that learning should be meaningful and connected to children’s own experiences.

PLAY, TALK and FIRST HAND EXPERIENCES
Play links all learning together and is the leading form of development in children, allowing them to operate at their highest level.

CREATIVITY
Being creative allows children to make connections between their inner world of feelings and their outer world of ‘things’ and experiences, and to reflect on them both.

FREEDOM AND GUIDANCE
We recognise the importance of free movement, free choice and self activity, but know these should sit within a framework of guidance – in which the role of the adult is crucial.

PLAY OUTDOORS
Everyday experience of the natural world outdoors is essential so that children can learn to appreciate its wonders and begin to understand the interrelationships between all living things.
